As the weather turns cooler and the nights begin to draw in earlier and earlier it brings with it the end of the summer drifting season. The BDC and IDC 2015 series might be over for another year but that doesn’t mean we’ll be hibernating in the workshop for the winter just yet. On 24-25th October Japspeed drivers Shane Lynch and Paul ‘Smokey’ Smith will go head to head against a grid of highly skilled competitors including Ken Block at the 2015 Gymkhana Grid final!
Taking place at Santa Pod Raceway this weekend will see Shane and Paul take on Ken Blocks own style of the traditional Gymkhana Autocross – a form of motorsport where drivers must negotiate a precision driving course at high speed incorporating a pre-determined sequence of drifts, figure 8s, donuts and slaloms.
Unlike more traditional events Gymkhana is an intense event that demands not only impeccable driving skills but mental agility as drivers must memorise the course and sequence with the goal of achieving the quickest time. Gymkhana Grid is world renowned for taking this tried and tested format and introduces significantly bigger courses that require not only technical skill but it must be equally matched by high horsepower in order to gain the fastest time.
Having recently returned from a trip to the USA, Paul ‘Smokey’ Smith will be hoping to take home the top spot with his ever-reliable 1.5JZ powered Nissan S15. A veteran crowd pleaser and all round smoke machine Paul will be bringing his skill and experience as well as few tricks learnt from our cousins across the pond to raise the game on UK soil.
Joining him at the event Shane Lynch will be laying it all on the line this weekend as he also competes in the RWD category. Shane will be taking on all would-be challengers in the highly anticipated 650bhp supercharged v8 370z.
Not content with one category, Shane will also be taking to the Grid in the all-star RX150 Buggy competition. He’ll be taking on Monster Energy athletes André Villa, Nicolas Hamilton, Steve Peat, Riku Tahko and Liam Doran in throwing the RX-150 around the Grid.
“I was so determined to make it happen this year. We unveiled my Japspeed Nissan 370Z at Gatebil Rudskogen earlier in the year, and now I’m going to get to drive it in anger at Gymkhana. I’m extremely excited about racing in the RX150 buggy competition too. It’s a new format for this year, and its going to be a tough competition for sure. Roll on the end of October.”

This weekend is shaping up to be an incredible event as not only is it the first competitive event for the Japspeed 370z but Ken Block is set to bring the legendary Mustang Hoonicorn and our fellow Maxxis Tyres teammate Ryan Tuerck will also be competing in the newly unveiled Hoonigan Ford Escort.
Check out what happened when Ryan first took the Escort out for a spin, hit the image below to view the video.
With Gymkhana Grid’s popularity continually on the up and with more and more drivers being attracted to its relatively simple, yet hugely addictive nature…not to mention the opportunity to take on legends such as Ken Block and our Fellow Maxxis Tyres athletes Ryan Tuerck & Mountain bike legend Steve Peat…. this is one event we couldn’t be any more excited to be part of.
