Only a week after the start of the 2015 British Drift Championship and a podium place for Danny Eyles, Shane ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan headed back out on track for the inaugural round of the 2015 Irish Drift Championship at Mondello Park.
Taking place as part of the legendary Modified Live event over the weekend of 25th-26th April; IDC round one would see a restructuring to the Championship in the form of the newly introduced sudden death battles.
Under the new format the top 8 drivers in qualifying are allocated spaces in the top 16 as normal however those drivers who qualifying in the 9th – 24th positions go into sudden death battles for the remaining 8 top 16 spaces.
The two day event began on the 25th with plenty of seat time and practice available for Shane to get acquainted with the track layout and setup the Japspeed RB25-powered S15. With an abundance of track time available on the Saturday Shane put in a series of fantastic runs despite the wet conditions.
The following day saw the main event and with it the sunshine which dried out the track for a day of tyre smoke and close proximity battles.
First up would be qualifying and despite a number of highly successful practice runs the day before, the shift in conditions caught Shane slightly off-guard who narrowly missed out on a top 8 place in qualifying. This meant he would now head into a sudden death battle with Kieran Stack. After a close run battle it would be Shane who slid his way into the top 16!
The top 16 battles saw Shane drawn up against Tomas Kiely – a hugely impressive driver at the young age of only 15! With both drivers barely giving an inch it was a spectacle to watch however on his chase run Shane dropped two wheels into the dirt which would ultimately put an end to his campaign for the podium.
Young Tomas would later go on to face off against Luke Fink in the semi-finals before claiming victory and taking 3rd place on the podium alongside Nigel Colfer in 2nd and James Deane in 1st.
On behalf of all at Team Japspeed we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate James Deane, Nigel Colfer and Tomas Kiely on their success at the first Round of the Irish Drift Championship this past weekend!
Make sure you catch all the action as Shane returns for IDC Round 2 at Green Glens Arena in Millstreet, Cork for some indoor drifting!
